William D. Hooper Bayard P. Holmes Since the late 1800's, Hooper Holmes, Inc. has been helping the insurance industry with a full line of services from underwriting reports to full scale claims investigations. As time progressed, the services expanded into the banking industry for which credit reports, delinquency, and foreclosure inspections were also available from Hooper Holmes. In the late 60's, and early 70's, insurance professionals realized the burden placed on them by having to find medical people available to examine their applicants for life insurance. Recognizing the problem, Hooper Holmes acted swiftly, and established a small unit of nurses in their New Jersey corporate office. These nurses would examine applicants in their homes and forward the completed exams to the respective insurance companies. The "unit from New Jersey" was so overwhelmingly received by the insurance industry, that a short time later, PORTAMEDIC became a permanent fixture in every Hooper Holmes office throughout the country. Today, Hooper Holmes provides outsourced risk assessment services, including underwriting and claims information to the life, health, automobile, and workers' compensation insurance industries. The Company provides these health information services through over 275 locations nationwide and in the United Kingdom. Under the trade name Portamedic, Hooper Holmes is the largest provider of nationwide examination services to the life and health insurance industry.
